Purpose of Meeting
American Beauty is a collection of photographs, which at first glance may seem random and somewhat unrelated. To me, they are all about what it means to be or to feel connected or disconnected to others, to animals, to the land, to the world. I’ve divided this exhibit into three sections: solitary, pairs, and groups. Every one of these images begs the question of what do we belong to? When do we feel alone, or lonely – even if we are among others. When do we experience the sensation of integration – even if we are alone in nature? I grapple with the notion of connectedness all the time. It’s part of the human condition; we define ourselves in relation to others, to communities, to spiritual contentment borne out of shared experiences.
